Sonic Signposts

Originally designed as a workshop for GCSE students this is an investigation of texture and timbre with symphony orchestra.  A major piece is the usual focus with extracts from other works.   A variety of pieces can form the focus - workshops have so far included:

 Aims

  • To increase awareness and understanding of texture and timbre in music.

  • To demonstrate their importance in the compositional process.

Content

  • Prior basic knowledge of orchestras is expected but is not essential.

  • The composer’s palette, a symphony orchestra, is introduced with examples to demonstrate the effect of instrumental type on orchestral texture.

  • Explanation of content and context of musical material leads to examination of specific timbres and textures show how to give greater expression or clarity of meaning to music.

  • The session includes demonstrations and interactive tasks based on developing aural ability.

  • The session includes a short performance with participants grouped in and around the orchestra (space permitting).

Support material

  • A comprehensive support pack with information and worksheets is provided to staff on CD at the end of the workshop.

Duration 

  • 60-75 minutes

Numbers

  •  Depends on venue, preferably not more than 300, maximum 500.
