Good Vibrations I & II
These interactive workshops
provide an entertaining and informative introduction to orchestral music and can
be tailored to suit a wide range of ages from infants to adults. The content
of both versions is similar, Good Vibrations I being a slightly
shortened version most suitable for infants or if there are time constraints.
The musical content is centred on Mozart’s 40th Symphony and the
workshop involves 30 performers: 28 players, conductor and presenter.
Aims
-
To increase awareness, understanding and enjoyment of orchestral
music.
-
To develop skills in listening and appraisal.
Content
-
No previous knowledge or specific skills required.
-
Based mostly around pieces of music written by Mozart, including
the Symphony No 40 and 4th Horn Concerto, plus Strauß’ Pizzicato
Polka.
-
Instruments are demonstrated individually,
including “blind”
demonstrations to help to focus listening skills. Particular attention is paid
to instruments with which participants are often unfamiliar – especially horn,
bassoon and double bass.
-
The sections of the orchestra are explained and simple
demonstrations given to show how the instruments create the sounds.
-
The orchestral texture is gradually built to show the effect of
adding each section of the orchestra.
-
The role of the conductor is demonstrated in an informative and
entertaining manner.
-
Listening tasks are short and specifically focused.
-
The workshop involves a variety of interactive tasks – including
physical response to musical ideas as well as singing, clapping and beating
time.
-
The session culminates with a short performance with participants
grouped in and around the orchestra (depending on space available and number of
participants).
